Growing Together Through Clean Energy

HyNQ is creating jobs and powering our community towards a sustainable future.

North Queensland Clean Energy Project

North Queensland Clean Energy Project (HyNQ or the Project) is a large-scale integrated project involving renewable energy, green hydrogen, the export of green ammonia and the production of green liquid hydrogen for domestic use.

HyNQ will be located at, and adjacent to, the Abbot Point State Development Area to repurpose existing infrastructure into a decarbonisation platform. Through the diversification of traditional industries in the region, HyNQ will create real long-term opportunities with a clear job driven pathway.

Development Update

The Project has been in development since 2020 and has achieved significant milestones. The HyNQ partners have been busy progressing the project with the following major milestones recently completed:

  • the Pre-Front End Engineering Design (FEED) study in September 2023
  • federal grant funding applications submitted for both the Townsville Hydrogen Hub and the Hydrogen Headstart Program
  • detailed financial modelling and optimisation of project sizing
  • active and ongoing consultation with project stakeholders and Traditional Owner groups
  • first boots-on-ground ecological studies of the process precinct and renewable lands
  • planning pathway review with a clear project approval pathway and timeframes identified
  • energy assessment for solar and wind developments incorporating 18 months of project site SODAR measurement
  • participation in the recently formed Queensland Government Abbot Point Activation Initiative
